Fedje Municipal - 125 smaller islands and skerries

Author: Gjermund Havstad, the tourist office at Fedje..

Over the last ten years, many have discovered Fedje as an exotic travel destination. One of the attractions is Kræmmerholmen, a trading post and inn from 1668. In 1991, the main building was restored, now you can eat fresh fish in the restaurant and sleep in one of 9 good standards cabins with the total of 40 beds. Larger groups will also be welcome!

In 1855, the hydrographical authorities accomplished a remarkable feat in building a 108 foot tall cast-iron tower on a weather-exposed islet. The official in charge was doubtful about the location, and said that unless one should stumble upon an exceptionally good summer, it presents so many complications that I have not yet seen its equal in the years I have spent in this service. The lighthouse itself is built with one-inch cast-iron plates, and the ground and first floors are lined with 35,000 bricks. The lighthouse on the islet Hellisøy can be experienced on weekend lighthouse safaris. It is also possible to rent the lighthouse keeper’s quarters. In July you can enjoy an art exhibition at the lighthouse. Please call us for more information.

Fedje is a place for peace of mind, a place for reflection. Enjoy ocean fishing trips, hike the North Sea Trail, feel the salty sea breeze and go hiking in preserved cultural landscapes. If the weather’s good, there’s an excellent place to go swimming in the middle of the island.

Access to Fedje
Fedje is in the northwest corner of Hordaland and is the westernmost municipality in Norway. It consists of the main island of Fedje (7.4 km2) and 125 smaller islands and skerries. The distance to the mainland (Sævrøy) is 4.5 km. Fedje has a population of about 680. There is a ferry service between Sævrøy and Fedje with 7-10 crossings per day. The crossing takes approximately 30 minutes. The total traveling time from Bergen by car is approximately 2 hours. You can also take the bus from the bus station in Bergen. The Airport Bus takes 20 minutes from Bergen Airport Flesland to the bus station. The bus station is also close to the railroad station with trains to and from Oslo.

The bus to Fedje also stops at SAS Bryggen Hotel, close to the boat from Newcastle. Welcome to Fedje!
