Author: Fjord Tours.

Norway in a nutshell is one of the most popular round trips in Norway. It takes you through some of the loveliest scenery in Fjord Norway. You experience the Flaam railway line, the Aurlandsfjord, the Naeroyfjord (the narrowest part of the Sognefjord) and the steep Stalheimskleivane hairpin bends.

The Bergen Line - crossing the roof of Norway
The 471-km rail link between Oslo in east and Bergen in west is a dramatically beautiful train journey. This line is exposed to harsh weather and wind, which is one of the greatest challenges. At a height of 1 222m, Finse is the highest station on the Bergen Line. At Myrdal the Flaam valley plunges down towards the Aurlandsfjord.

The Flaam railway line - a masterpiece of engineering
The journey on the Flaam railway line is one of the highlights of the trip. It is fascinating to be on the train as it glides through tunnels and open stretches on its way down the wild Flaam valley from mountain to fjord in just 20 km! You have a view of an ever-changing panorama of huge mountains and thundering waterfalls.

The most beautiful experience on a Norwegian fjord
Down in idyllic Flaam, It is time to eat and wander around a bit before continuing the trip by boat on the Aurlandsfjord and into the Naeroyfjord, one of the narrowest fjord inlets in Western Norway, surrounded by mountains up to 1,800m high. This fjord inlet of the Sognefjord is both beautiful and charming. Small west-country farms lie dotted along the mountainsides and you can often see goats grazing along the edge of the fjord. If you are lucky, you will also see seals lying on the smooth rocks along the shore. In a National Geographic survey of the most popular World Heritage sites, Norway's western fjords emerged as the winner, in competition with other prestigious UNESCO sites, such as the Great Wall of China, Galapagos, the pyramids of Egypt and Grand Canyon.

Stalheimskleivane
The ship docks at beautiful Gudvangen. The next stage of the trip is the bus journey up the 13 steep, spectacular Stalheimskleivane hairpin bends, with views of the Stalheim and Sivle waterfalls, to the Stalheim hotel. After a brief stop here to enjoy the view, the journey continues to Voss followed by a relaxing train trip back to Bergen or Oslo.

Optional direction of travel, and may be started from any railway station along the selected route. These tours could be enjoyed as day excursions or as extended roundtrips. For the longest suggested tour from Oslo via Voss and Bergen, normally the return to Oslo has to be done by the night train if this tour is done in one day.

Recommended accommodation in Flaam: Skahjem - Flåm
