The CMI library is the largest specialized research library in Norway in the area of development studies and serves as a national resource center for documentation on development issues and developing countries.
Library services The CMI Library welcomes outside visitors, particularly researchers and advanced students working on development issues.
Books may be borrowed by outside readers, normally on an inter-library loan basis. Please enquire with the library of your institution on procedures for an inter-library loan.
Other services provided on an inter-library basis include photocopies of articles in periodicals, subject to agreement of your institution's library to reciprocate our requests.
The CMI Library collections The Library presently has about 65,000 documents and holds current subscriptions to approximately 600 periodicals. Some 3,000 documents are added each year.
Specialization The thematic focus of the collections is on the subjects of economics, political science, sociology, anthropology, demography, human rights and women. The Library also possesses extensive holdings of statistical publications from selected countries. The countries best covered are the traditional main recipients of Norwegian development assistance in Africa and Asia. Nevertheless, basic documentation is on hand for most countries.
The Library has good collections of so-called "gray literature" (working papers, reports and other documentation not available commercially), particularly on developing countries where staff members have worked.
Exchange of Publications CMI invites institutions which regularly publish documents relevant to the work of CMI to establish a formal Exchange of Publications Agreement with CMI. Under such an agreement, the partner institution will receive CMI publications automatically and free of charge and will reciprocate on the same basis.
CMI is primarily interested in documentation on socio-economic development issues, including human rights, globally or with a geographic focus on sub-Saharan Africa and South-Asia. Institutions interested in exchanging their publications with CMI are invited to write to the CMI library.
